The sunscreen aisle in 2026 contains roughly forty brands, two hundred products, and several distinct formulation philosophies. None of this existed a hundred years ago. The cultural shift from "the sun is healthy" to "the sun is dangerous enough to require daily protection on every exposed surface" took most of the twentieth century, and the marketing campaigns that shaped it are some of the most successful in consumer history.

This is the story of how we got from coconut oil and tanning oil to SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen. It is partly a science story and partly a cultural one. The science arrived first. The culture took decades to catch up.

The tanning era (1900 to 1940)

For most of human history, pale skin was the beauty ideal. The aristocracy avoided the sun because the working class could not. Tanned skin meant outdoor labor. The richer you were, the paler you were.

This began to shift in the 1920s, for a reason that had nothing to do with health. Coco Chanel, returning from a holiday on the Riviera, was photographed with a tan. The photographer, in the telling that has become the dominant origin story, was French Vogue's Daniel, and the image was published in 1929. The Vogue cover and the cultural machinery around it turned a working-class skin tone into a marker of leisure and wealth.

The medical advice during this period was actively pro-sun. Sun exposure was prescribed for tuberculosis, for rickets, for general "wellness." Hospitals had solariums. Doctors sent patients to the mountains for "sun cures." The sun was treated as a kind of miracle drug.

The products of the era reflected this. Coconut oil, olive oil, and various plant butters were the standard tanning "accelerators." The first commercial suntan lotion — a product called Ambre Solaire — was launched in 1936 by L'Oréal founder Eugène Schueller. It was an oil-based product designed to enhance tanning, not prevent burning. The label explicitly marketed the product as a way to tan more efficiently.

The science starts (1930s to 1950s)

The first scientific studies linking sun exposure to skin damage began in the 1930s. A German physicist, Friedrich Ellinger, published research showing that UV radiation could damage cellular DNA. The implications for skin cancer were not immediately understood, but the mechanism was.

The first effective sunscreen was developed in the 1940s by Benjamin Green, an airman and pharmacist in the US. Green had witnessed severe sunburns during World War II and developed a product called Coppertone Suntan Lotion, which became commercially available in 1950. The active ingredient was para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). It was not particularly effective by modern standards, but it was the beginning.

The first products marketed as "sunblocks" rather than "tanning lotions" appeared in the late 1950s. These contained zinc oxide, the same active ingredient still used in mineral sunscreens. The formulations were thick, white, and unpleasant to wear. They looked like war paint. Most consumers did not use them.

The sunscreen era begins (1960s to 1980s)

The cultural resistance to sunscreen lasted until the 1960s and 1970s, when a series of epidemiological studies established the link between UV exposure and skin cancer conclusively. The most cited is a 1965 study by Albert Kligman and colleagues that established the connection between cumulative sun exposure and actinic keratoses (precancerous lesions) in older adults.

Around the same time, the formulation of sunscreens improved dramatically. PABA was replaced by less irritating UV filters (octinoxate, oxybenzone, avobenzone). SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings were standardized in 1978 by the US FDA, allowing consumers to compare products numerically. The cultural messaging shifted — from "tan safely" to "avoid burning" — but tanning was still the goal. The SPF 15 products of the 1980s were designed to prevent burning while still allowing tanning.

The Australian slip, where Australia led the world on sun protection messaging because of the country's high melanoma rates and Anglo-Saxon population's vulnerability to UV. The Slip-Slop-Slap campaign of 1981 (slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat) was one of the most successful public health campaigns of the late twentieth century. Australian melanoma rates, which had been climbing rapidly, plateaued in the 1990s and have continued to decline since.

The anti-aging revolution (1990s to 2010s)

The biggest shift in the cultural understanding of sun exposure came from two unrelated developments.

The first was the understanding that UV exposure was responsible for the majority of visible skin aging. The landmark studies in the 1990s and 2000s established that up to 90 percent of visible skin aging — wrinkles, sagging, hyperpigmentation — was caused by UV exposure, not by chronological age. The term "photoaging" entered the consumer vocabulary.

The second was the development of comfortable, cosmetically elegant daily sunscreens. The products of the 1970s and 1980s were thick, white, and unpleasant. The formulations that emerged in the 2000s — particularly the Asian-developed formulations that used chemical UV filters like Tinosorb S and Tinosorb M — were lightweight, transparent, and wearable under makeup.

The combination of the science and the formulations changed consumer behavior. By the 2010s, daily sunscreen use was becoming the standard recommendation from dermatologists worldwide. The "anti-aging sunscreen" category — products that combined SPF with anti-aging actives like antioxidants and peptides — became one of the fastest-growing segments in the beauty industry.

The current era (2010s to 2026)

The current sunscreen landscape is shaped by three developments.

Mineral vs. chemical. The reformulation movement of the 2010s and 2020s pushed back against chemical UV filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene) over concerns about coral reef damage and potential endocrine disruption. The result was the rise of mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) as the "clean" alternative.

The reef-safety concern is real but has been overstated in marketing. Most chemical UV filters are washed off before reaching the ocean in significant concentrations. The endocrine disruption concern is also more nuanced than the marketing suggests — oxybenzone in particular has been shown to have weak endocrine activity in vitro, but the concentrations absorbed through normal sunscreen use are well below the levels of concern.

Mineral sunscreens are not inherently safer for human use. They are available for people who prefer them, and modern formulations have addressed the historical white-cast problem. La Roche-Posay's UVMune 400 (a chemical sunscreen) and Australian Gold's Botanical (a mineral sunscreen) are both excellent products.

SPF inflation. The market has trended toward higher SPF numbers. SPF 50+ is now the standard for daily facial sunscreens in most markets. SPF 100 exists. The marginal benefit of SPF 100 over SPF 50 is small — SPF 50 blocks about 98 percent of UVB, SPF 100 blocks about 99 percent. The bigger difference is between SPF 30 and SPF 50, which is why dermatologists generally recommend SPF 30 or higher.

Tinted sunscreens. One of the most significant recent developments. Tinted mineral sunscreens provide SPF plus light coverage in a single product, addressing the historical complaint that mineral sunscreens leave a white cast. The category has exploded in the last five years. Supergoop Glowscreen, EltaMD UV Physical, and Australian Gold Botanical Tinted are leading products.

What is actually true about sunscreen in 2026

A summary of what the evidence supports, separated from what the marketing claims.

Daily SPF prevents photoaging. This is the strongest, most consistent finding in the literature. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher prevents the majority of visible skin aging.

Daily SPF reduces skin cancer risk. Multiple large studies have shown that regular sunscreen use reduces the risk of squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 percent and the risk of melanoma by about 50 percent.

Chemical and mineral sunscreens are both safe. The data on chemical filters and endocrine disruption is not strong enough to justify avoiding them. Both categories have been extensively studied.

Higher SPF is better, but the difference is small. SPF 50 is meaningfully better than SPF 30. SPF 100 is barely better than SPF 50. Most of the benefit is in the lower numbers.

Reapplication matters more than SPF. Most people under-apply sunscreen. The recommended amount is about a quarter teaspoon for the face and neck. Most people apply about half that. Reapplication every two hours (or after swimming or sweating) is more important than the SPF number.

Sunscreen should be the last step of the morning routine. Apply after moisturizer, before makeup. The order matters because layering changes effectiveness.

The cultural residue

The tanning culture of the twentieth century has not fully disappeared. The "base tan" idea — that getting a tan before a tropical vacation protects you — is still common and still wrong. A base tan provides roughly SPF 3 of protection. It does not prevent burning, and the UV exposure required to build it has already done damage.

The cultural shift is real but not complete. In 2026, daily sunscreen is the default for dermatologists and the skincare-engaged public. It is not yet the default for the broader population. About 30 percent of US adults report using sunscreen daily. In Australia, the figure is roughly 80 percent. The gap is mostly cultural, not scientific.

The history of sunscreen is the history of the gap between what the science knows and what the culture believes. In 1920, the culture was right and the science was just starting to catch up. In 1960, the science was clear and the culture was catching up. In 2026, the science is overwhelming and the culture is mostly caught up, but the residual population that still treats the sun as harmless is large enough to maintain the public health gap.

The most useful thing you can do today is wear it daily. The most useful thing you can do for your future self is start now. The compounding effect of daily SPF over decades is the single most evidence-backed anti-aging intervention available. The product is cheap. The application is quick. The benefit is permanent.

The sun has not changed. Our understanding of it has.
