"Clean beauty" is now a thirty-billion-dollar category with no agreed-upon definition. That should tell you something. It is, in practice, a marketing term that covers everything from genuinely thoughtful formulations to greenwashed products with the same ingredient list as the conventional version.

The good news is that you do not need to believe in the brand category to make good decisions. You need to read the ingredient list. Here is how.

The ingredients dermatologists actually flag

A short list, distilled from clinical dermatology literature and the EU's stricter-than-US cosmetic regulations. These are the ones with a real, repeated, peer-reviewed reason to be cautious.

Fragrance (parfum)

Not a single ingredient — a trade-secret blend of dozens. The reason dermatologists flag it is that fragrance is the most common cause of contact dermatitis in cosmetic products. If you have sensitive skin, eczema, or unexplained breakouts, fragrance is the first thing to remove.

If a product is labeled "unscented" but the list includes "parfum," it is scented to mask another ingredient. Truly fragrance-free products have no parfum in the list.

Essential oils

Marketed as natural and therefore safe. The truth is that essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that are among the most common skin sensitizers in cosmetics. Lavender, citrus oils, tea tree, peppermint, and ylang-ylang are all routine culprits.

If a product contains "lavender oil" or "citrus aurantium dulcis oil," it is not safer than one with synthetic fragrance. It is more likely to irritate.

Drying alcohols (alcohol denat., isopropyl alcohol)

The alcohols used in skincare are not the same as the ethanol in wine. Alcohol denat is an excellent penetration enhancer and a common solvent in serums. In a well-formulated product, it is fine. In a toner applied twice daily on sensitive skin, it is damaging.

If alcohol is in the first five ingredients of a leave-on product and you have dry or sensitive skin, pass.

Chemical sunscreen filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate)

Concerning for two reasons: coral reef toxicity (which has led to bans in Hawaii and parts of Mexico) and a small but real signal in endocrine disruption studies. The evidence is not conclusive, but the safer alternatives are available.

Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are equally effective for daily use and avoid these concerns entirely.

Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers

DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and a handful of other preservatives release small amounts of formaldehyde over time. They are common in cheap shampoos and conditioners. The exposure is low, but cumulative, and there are better alternatives.

The ingredients that are not actually concerning

The internet has spent fifteen years creating moral panics about ingredients that, on closer inspection, are not problematic.

Parabens

The most over-villainized ingredient in modern cosmetics. Parabens are effective, well-studied preservatives with an excellent safety record at the concentrations used in skincare. The 2004 study that linked them to breast cancer was retracted; subsequent studies have not reproduced the result.

If you avoid parabens, you should know that you are replacing them with less effective preservatives that require higher concentrations. For most people, parabens are fine.

Mineral oil

A byproduct of petroleum refining that is, paradoxically, one of the safest and most effective moisturizing ingredients available. It is non-comedogenic, non-allergenic, and used in neonatal intensive care units to protect premature infant skin.

The "natural" alternatives marketed against mineral oil — shea butter, coconut oil — are far more likely to cause reactions.

Silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone)

Lightweight, non-reactive, non-comedogenic, excellent for skin feel. The internet has decided they "suffocate" skin. They do not. Silicones sit on top of the skin and evaporate or wash off. They do not penetrate and they do not clog pores in any meaningful way.

How to actually read a list

Ingredient lists are ordered by concentration. The first five ingredients make up roughly 80 percent of the product. Anything past ingredient ten is present at less than one percent and rarely matters for efficacy.

If you cannot pronounce it, that is not a reason to avoid it. Most ingredient names are systematic chemical descriptors that sound intimidating by design. "Aqua" is water. "Tocopherol" is vitamin E.

The trick is to learn the dozen or so names worth caring about, ignore the rest, and focus on whether the product has the actives you are paying for.

Clean beauty, done honestly, is about formulation literacy. Done badly, it is just marketing with better photography.
